Chiropractic FAQs
Some answers to common questions we get asked...
How does chiropractic care relieve back pain?
Chiropractic care focuses on assessing and improving the function of the spine and joints. By using gentle, manual techniques, chiropractors aim to reduce stiffness, improve mobility, and ease musculoskeletal tension associated with back pain. This approach is natural and tailored to your comfort and needs.
What should I expect during my first chiropractic visit for back pain?
During your first visit, your chiropractor will review your health history, carry out a musculoskeletal assessment, and discuss the symptoms you're experiencing. Based on this, they’ll recommend a care plan tailored to your needs, with the aim of supporting joint function, improving mobility, and easing discomfort related to back pain.
How quickly will I experience relief from back pain?
Relief can vary from person to person. Some people may notice a change after one or two sessions, while others find that progress takes longer. Your chiropractor will explain what to expect and tailor your care based on your goals, comfort, and response to treatment.
Is chiropractic care safe for chronic back pain?
Chiropractic care is generally considered safe for most people with musculoskeletal conditions, including chronic back pain, when provided by a registered chiropractor. Techniques are gentle and adapted to your comfort level. Evidence suggests that spinal manipulation may help reduce pain and improve function in some cases of chronic low back pain.¹
¹ Coulter, I.D., et al. (2018). Manipulation and mobilization for treating chronic low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis. The Spine Journal, 18(5), 866–879.
Will I need ongoing treatments?
Some people choose to continue with periodic chiropractic care because they feel it helps them stay mobile and manage occasional discomfort. Ongoing care is always optional, and your chiropractor will discuss what’s appropriate based on your goals, progress, and preferences.
How much does chiropractic treatment cost?
The cost of your chiropractic care will depend on your individual needs and the recommended treatment plan. Your chiropractor will explain all fees clearly in advance, and we operate a transparent pricing policy with no hidden charges. You’re welcome to discuss pricing at any time before starting care.
What Causes Back Pain?
Understanding Potential Contributing Factors
Muscle strain from poor posture or lifting
Repetitive strain from poor posture or lifting objects without proper technique can place stress on muscles and joints, leading to tightness and discomfort.
Disc or nerve-related symptoms
In some cases, changes in the spinal discs – such as bulging or irritation – may contribute to back pain or discomfort that radiates into the legs. This is sometimes associated with conditions like sciatica.
Age-related changes and joint wear
As we age, the spine’s joints and discs can lose flexibility and cushioning, which may lead to stiffness or discomfort during movement.
Sedentary habits or prolonged sitting
Spending long periods sitting or being inactive can weaken muscles that support the spine, making the back more vulnerable to discomfort or strain.

Symptoms of Back Pain
How Back Pain Can Be Experienced
Sharp or dull pain in the upper, middle, or lower back:
Discomfort may range from a persistent ache to sudden, sharp pain, depending on the source and nature of the issue.
Limited mobility and stiffness:
Reduced flexibility in the back can make movements like bending or twisting more difficult.
Pain radiating into the legs or hips:
Sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower back and pelvis and travels down the legs. However, similar symptoms can also arise from other structures, such as the spinal joints or muscles. This is known as referred pain, where discomfort is felt in an area away from the actual source.
Muscle spasms or tension:
Muscles in the back may tighten or spasm in response to postural strain or musculoskeletal imbalance.
Discomfort after long periods of standing or sitting:
Staying in one position for extended periods can contribute to stiffness or tension in the back and surrounding muscles.

Your Initial Consultation -
What to Expect...
What to expect from your first visit to Phoenix Health Hub.

01
Initial Consultation
After a warm welcome to the clinic, you'll be asked to complete a health history form. This helps your chiropractor understand any symptoms you’re experiencing and identify relevant lifestyle or medical factors to consider during your assessment.

02
Physical Examination
Our Chiropractors in Uckfield, Sussex will carry out a thorough physical and postural assessment to explore possible musculoskeletal factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. This helps guide your care plan and ensures a tailored approach to your needs.

03
X-rays
If clinically appropriate, your chiropractor may take X‑ray images to gain a clearer understanding of your spinal and joint health. This helps identify any structural or musculoskeletal factors that may be contributing to your symptoms and ensures your care is safe and appropriate.

04
Report of Findings
At this follow-up visit, your chiropractor will review the findings from your consultation and any tests or X-rays (if taken). They’ll explain what was observed and discuss a recommended care plan based on your goals, preferences, and response to the initial assessment.

05
Your Treatment
If you decide to begin care following your Report of Findings appointment, your first chiropractic treatment can usually be carried out during the same visit. Your chiropractor will explain what to expect and ensure the treatment is tailored to your comfort and individual needs.
