Headaches by Maria

Headaches are a common problem and everyone suffers from them at some point in their lives.

They can range from just a small annoyance to life altering. Headaches have many causes. The most common are stress, posture, dehydration, and tiredness.

First, keep a diary of the triggers of your headaches, to see if you notice a pattern: a typical headache diary monitors the amount of water drank, food and drink you had, how many hours of sleep you had, activity, and your mood.

Once you find what is triggering the headaches, avoid the triggers.

Exercises

If the headache is being caused by postural stresses there are some exercises you can do at home.

When our top shoulder muscles get tight, the muscles in between our shoulder blades, which keep our shoulder blades back, get weak therefore, rounding the shoulders.  This is a really nice stretch to open up the chest and take off the tension of the top of the shoulders and activate the muscles in between the shoulder blades.

  1. Tuck your chin in

  2. Neck back and  in line with shoulders

  3. Drop the shoulders down

  4. Bring shoulders back until your shoulder blades are squeezing together

  5. Hold arms out

  6. Hold for 30 seconds

  7. Try and repeat this as many times as you can per day.

Meditation can also be helpful for headaches, as stress is a common cause for headaches.

Find somewhere quiet, lay down or sit down.

Close your eyes, breathe in through your belly for four seconds, hold for four seconds and then breathe out four seconds.

This is an effective relaxation technique. Try to do this for five to ten minutes per day.
